Cats need litter and there is a wide variety of them on the market today available for use. Of all the choices that one can find on the market, tofu cat litter has some special qualities and advantages. In this blog post, let’s delve into some obscure facts about tofu cat litter that most people do not know that only 1% of cat owners are privy to.

    Who is Tofu Cat Litter?

Tofu cat litter is also made using soybean residue, pea residue, corn residue, starch and guar gum, and is food-grade. Although it means ‘bean curd’, it has very little to do with the real tofu as we know it. The guar gum, derived from the seeds of guar beans, serves as a natural binder within the pills. The raw materials are dried, crushed, and formed into cylindrical pellets, typically ranging in diameter from 1.0mm to 3.0mm.

Why Tofu Cat Litter is Popular

    1. Natural Ingredients

Tofu cat litter is made from biodegradable, non-polluting and safe food-grade materials. This makes it safe for cats and even if a cat accidentally swallows it whole, it will not harm them. However, one has to be careful while selecting the products to use because some brands might use industrial glue or low-quality perfumes which could be hazardous.

    2. Excellent Absorption

This is perhaps due to the high-temperature gelatinisation process used in the manufacture of tofu cat litter. This includes procedures such as drying, cooling and fashioning of the pellets, further increasing their density and softness. In particular, some tofu cat litter may not be absorbed well due to some techniques used during manufacturing.

    3. Low Dust

To be specific, tofu cat litter is characterized by its low dust emission, which is ultimately beneficial for both cats and their owners. The regular litter tends to cause problems such as respiratory problems due to dust accumulation, while that of tofu cat litter is minimal. However, because of the load applied by your cat, some dust may still settle at the base of the litter box as the litter disintegrates with time.

    4. Flushable

Another notable feature that comes with tofu cat litter is that it can be flushed down the toilet. You can discard clumps right into the toilet which makes cleanup a much easier thing to do. It is only advised to avoid flushing large amounts at a go since it would lead to blocking of the drainages.

    Drawbacks of Tofu Cat Litter

    1. Prone to Mould

Because tofu cat litter is made from natural materials, it tends to attract mould when used in areas with high humidity. It is also not recommended to keep large quantities of it in reserve and the product should be kept in a cool and dry environment.

    2. Weaker Clumping

It is for this reason that tofu cat litter forms softer clumps as compared to other types of litter such as clay. This can make scooping a bit messier, as clumps may break apart from the bottom. This characteristic depends mainly on the production process, including the drying and cooling phases.

    3. Higher Consumption Rate

While taking tofu cat litter, is consumed more frequently as compared to clay litter. This means that it will require you to buy it more often, which might be a good idea depending on your pocket.

The Hidden Aspects Only 1% Know

    Ingredient Quality

Therefore, not all tofu cat litter are the same. This means the quality of the ingredients used in the preparation of these meals may differ greatly. Due to these modifications, some brands may use industrial plastic which is toxic rather than food plastic. It’s important to look for the brand and people’s reviews on whether they are buying the right product for their cat.

    Scented vs Unscented

It may be advisable to use products with a nice smell such as scented tofu cat litter to help eliminate the smell but these products are not healthy for cats. Their respiratory systems are very sensitive, and they get easily irritated by things such as artificial fragrances. On the other hand, cats dislike citrus smell so it may not be preferred to use a litter with the lemon smell. The recommendation would be to go for products that do not have any added fragrance in them to ensure there are no problems.

    Colour Additives

Tofu cat litter can come in different colours and it is quite common that these colours are created by food-safe dyes. But even these dyes can be dangerous if your cat has the habit of licking its paws after using the litter. Uncoloured unbleached natural tofu cat litter is safer to use.
